“The Shop on Substack Street”
To understand Substack, you must stop thinking of it as a computer program and start thinking of it as a physical town.
Opening a traditional blog is like setting up a stall in a dark, isolated alleyway. Substack is a bustling High Street. It handles your payments, deliveries, and records so you can focus entirely on your craft.
The Visual Metaphors to Remember:
The Clinical AI vs. The Human Chef: AI can write thousands of words in seconds, but it has never lived your life. Your unique struggles, triumphs, and lived experiences are the only things an algorithm cannot copy. That is why strangers trust you.
The Digital Signage: Your storefront must answer three things instantly: What do you cover? How do you help? Where do I join?
Handing Out Samples (Notes): You cannot stay hidden inside your shop. You must step out onto the street and hand out bite-sized “samples” of your best ideas to passersby.
Backward Math: Don’t chase millions of anonymous followers. Work backward from your goal. If you need $2,000, you only need 400 people paying $5, or just 4 people paying $500 for your high-level coaching. Focus on the right people, not all the people.
Before you dive into the technical clicks of the modules below, this blueprint gives you the 5-step journey you are about to take. I needed to understand what Substack was before I could use it. Keep this map handy, it helps when you are working.
